Topic: International Patent Best Practice

Speaker: Mike MaGee

Mike Magee is a freelance German to English translator specializing in technical translation, primarily patents. His specialty fields include chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental. Before entering into translation full-time he pursued a career in the environmental field with emphasis on air quality control, working with private consulting firms, the State of Texas (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and its predecessor agencies), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University with a double major in Chemistry and German. He attended one year of the Ph.D. program in Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, and later received a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from UT. Mike is a member and past president of the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters Association. He is also certified by the American Translators Association in German to English translation.

Mike will speak about the requirements for filing European and international applications, and will provide insights gained from translating not only patent applications, but also opposition proceedings and patent authority office actions. Since a patent may eventually need to be translated into one or more languages, the basics of the translation process will be described, with examples and helpful information for the patent author.;
